Reindeer B&W

rein_bw_l_cw-14

I am doing some B&W-versions on my reindeer photos. It is a bit difficult since my computer had to be repaired and I am now on a small laptop. What do you think, better in colours? rein_bw_l_cw-6

The last one is a reindeer bull, seeking ladies. There are some more in my portfolios, or in my reindeer photo galleries.

  1. These are amazing. I like picture #9 in your gallery where the bull is running. It’s hard to say if B&W is better than colour. Each type has qualities that make it special. I think the B&W makes you look at the shape and contrast more.

    1. And when I did these in colours I did hardly any editing (didn’t have the time). Now I a trying editing in B&W, and there are actually some choices. It can be hard to choose. Thanks a lot, Anneli.

  2. whenever i see a post of yours with the word, ‘reindeer,’ i always smile and look forward to the images!

you have my sympathy! the first 100 or so posts of mine were made from a mini laptop; the first time i saw one of my posts on a large screen, i all but panicked for fear of what the rest might look like!

i love the monochromatic images.. the deer all but look like they were posing in a studio setting!

  3. You definitely have MY sympathy when it comes to using a tiny laptop, Bente. I love your reindeer images, but think I would prefer the colour (over B & W), on this occasion. But that’s just me.

The colour gives them more of a feeling of being outdoors. The B & W gives more of a feeling of a studio type setting. Having said that, I love the ‘bull’ photo end of the fourth row in your Sami people folio. That particular B & W reindeer shot is perfect.

  4. Hi, Bente. The Black and White are spectacular. I think the Reindeer themselves make such a stunning subject. They are really majestic beings, as you have portrayed them in your portfolio and galleries. The images that stand out to me most are the ones in color in the galleries where there the reindeer are set off by a blue sky in the background.

  5. Probably because WordPress does such a crappy job of rendering photos, but the portfolio photos are much better than the ones in the post (even when looking at the same ones).

I would say these animals, and that setting, lends itself well to a B&W treatment. Very nice photos.

    1. I am not sure about rendering, Disperser, but it might be a difference since the ones in the galleries/portfolio are originals, and these in my blog have reduced sizes? Thanks for your comment.

  6. Hi,
Very nice photos, but I do like to see the animals in colour, I feel where animals are concerned the colour seems to give the photos a bit of life so to speak. 🙂

  7. The first one I don’t care for in B&W, but the other two are amazing. I don’t know what it is about the first one, something seems strange about him…But they are all great photos!

  8. I think these are very striking images Bente. It’s sometimes such a difficult choice to make when processing images. I think each has it’s own qualities. I really like these pictures. I hope you get your computer fixed soon! 🙂

  9. Good morning Bente, I like most of your posts, but this one which is more technical, is not ok. You can see to easy there has been worked on the pictures. You have to be more subtile ( 7, 9,14 , 15, 16, 19 are not done )
If you make the sky darker, make sure you have no white line around you subject, don’t exaggerate with something like tonal contrast ( 8, 17, 18 ). Try to work more local…
Sorry to be so annoying but I thought you should know this, anyway with compliment only you will not improve.

  10. Especially the second and third are very fine, nice tones fitting the subject. I think the first one is a bit overpronounced, too much contrast between the reindeer and the sky, which makes it a little unreal.
    thanks for sharing

  11. I tend to prefer colour for almost any shot. Although these are lovely and work well in B+W I still agree with people who have said they prefer outdoor nature shots in colour. It’s a rare shot I prefer in B+W.

  12. Just love the 2nd photo it’s so great – don’t know if black’nd white or color photos are best, maybe it depends on the situation and what is the purpose of the photo… 🙂

  14. Black and white adds more drama to photos, I think. Which is very appealing as well. For me colour and black an white are equally beautiful.

  15. Hey Bente – I have been a long time away but now back for a few years – I hope! I like the black and white versions and the colour ones. You can’t please everyone though – some will prefer colour and some black and white! I find shooting in colour much easier and usually stick to that. I find the tonal range quite difficult to achieve in B/W! Glad to be back on your blog, Bente!

    Cheers

  16. I generally like colored pictures more as thats what my eyes see. The first one looks like you pasted the background for some reason… the other 2 are good though 🙂

  17. I like the B&W for detail. The contrast makes them stand out, but the color makes them feel more natural and animal-like. So I like to see both, and I think it’s great to mix it up and have the variety sometimes.
Thanks for coming by my blog! 🙂

  18. Thanks so much for the ‘like’ on my post, which brought me to your site. Lovely pictures so I’m going to follow to see more. In fact I prefer the B&W, but then I am having a very serious love affair 🙂 with monochrome at the moment.

  19. Thanks for visiting me. I followed you back here. I think these monochrome photos are strong, and I think that because we are now so used to seeing colour images, that black and whites make us look more. Thr information they give is different. I have just started working on some abstract, symbolic colour images I did a while ago, making them into rich monochrome. When it works it has a purity and strength, an intellectual, conceptual effect because it more resembles a conscious construct than a recorded moment.
