Changing themes

reinharsjo_w-2

I have wondered for a long time, actually from the start, what theme to pick for this blog. I have looked at the collection of WordPress themes a couple of times. Tried some, and postponed the whole thing. I see some of you are changing themes quietly. I mention it, because I might do it again. And again? I am certainly not able to design one for myself, so I am looking for a mix were pictures will not be too small, a simple design, and a design were I can make some very small adjustment if needed. So now I will probably try something new, at last. According to WP there are more than 1600 different themes. but I have not seen all of them!

  1. It’s hard isn’t it? I think about changing mine from time to time, but then I think – people associate my blog with the one I’ve got, so it’s easier to leave well alone. Lazy? Good sense? Who knows?

  2. Dear Bente.
Welcome to the club. I know there is a lot of us who changes themes. Perhaps we are insecure of what will fit us best. Personally I change every now and then, mostly because I sometimes have to wright about the pictures I’m taking, but lately I have found out that my blog is first of all about photography and not writing. I found my theme by looking on other peoples blogs, tried it out and went back to the first theme, and from there tried another one.
They say that it is important to find a theme and stick to it so others vill recognize you, but I don’t know.. I just try to tell a story, but it would be cool to have something unique.

    1. Stick to it is probaly a good advice, but wasn’t satiesfied with the old one, and I am not the so sure about the new one either. It looks better, but now I see that is shows the picture dobble up, and the one presented on the main page is the last (if there is more than one). Nice to know your experience.

  3. It’s not so easy to decide for one theme. But the good news are that there are so many themes to choose from.😉 I like your new one. It’s fresh and clear. The photos are great and of course they appeal more the bigger you can show them here. God kveld!

  4. Brave one you are.I want to find a theme that has many qualities and I have not found that yet. I like to post large pics but can not with “chunk”theme. It is not customized and I am afraid to try that on my own.

This new theme displays your photos very well. The photo posted here is very pretty. The colors are soothing and the scene is beautiful.

  5. I’m not sure would theme or package affect ? The end of the day it all comes down to the content isn’t it ?
Only a question I haven’t found the answer is, how people knows it is boring before hand (without open)😀

    1. Content is what matters! But I think package is a bit important too. Boring before opening? Do you mean a blog post, or do you mean a theme. The themes you can try on your site before making a decition, but it is still hard to make a decition..😉

      1. I mean blog post. Some of them received up to 1100 but
some were hit less than 100 —- was that because of the listing on google or good key-word ?
Or kind of network of the readers, telling others. ? ? ?

      2. I really don’t know, Yoshizen. Strange thing happened since I changed the theme. My visitors are as normal, but the views are suddenly incredibly high, I mean incredible. Around 600 a day for 3 days now…I have no clue why.

  6. We all need a refresher, bente; it’s part of being creative. I like this theme for you as it displays your wonderful photography very well. And, no more sidebar, wonderful….that takes up valuable display space, so I’m glad there isn’t one with these theme. Just one comment about your Home page — don’t have too many pix, as the downloads eats into the bandwidth allowance! But, seeing your photos displayed like that really brings it home to me that you are a terrifically good photographer.🙂 PS: Two About pages?!
PPS: I like this post….the mood created. Good one, bente!

    1. Before I had no About pages, or I had, but it didn’t show. Maybe I tried two times. I must edit this, SOOOOON. And the sidebar is now in the About page(es). More tidy, but harder to find. Thanks a lot for your comment, Janina. I will have a look at my other site too… On my pc it works well, but maybe not for others, and thats no good.

  7. I’m kind of with Margaret21, people know my blog theme and it fits me. I did tweak it a bit, then again there are themes that are tempting but none I have found exactly fit. Whatever theme you have your photos stand out !

      1. You’re right. It is – just been having a little look. This is getting ridiculous. One could spend all day looking at interesting blogs. It’ll have to stop!

  8. This is a nice one Bente! I was looking for a very simple theme. One that gave you the option to remove the sidebar so that you could fill your page with your photograph (these are lovely by the way) and remove any clutter. I’m using modularity lite but have made a few tweeks to the .CSS. I’m currently looking for themes for another project. There’s an awful lot of choice but generally only a few that do what you really want them too. Good luck with your search!🙂

    1. I don’t think I have found all the choices, Chillbrook, and among the ones I found there are few that suits me. And I don’t know about tweeks.😉 Keep us posted about new projects.🙂

  9. I think you have to try out different themes until you find something you’re happy with. I think this one is already better because your photos are larger, but by all means keep browsing! We don’t mind. We’ll still see your photos, and one day you’ll find one that makes you happy. It’s kind of like shopping for a wife or husband.😉

  10. Your night has a wonderful rich blue in the photos above. They look very nice indeed.

And I know what you mean about changing ‘themes’. I’ve changed from a Google blog (when I was writing) to a WordPress blog (for photography). I’ve changed WordPress themes 3 times I think, looking for a simple uncluttered style. I had to put a sidebar in with a ‘sign-up’ email widget when the ‘follow’ at the top of the page didn’t work properly for some people, but I would prefer the photo to take up the whole width.

I like your new theme & style – it looks very simple and easy to read/view.

  11. The themes seem to be aimed at showing off photographs – in which case text is not kindly treated – or text, where photos are just “fit-ins”. I haven’t found a free theme yet that gives me what I want. I’ve changed twice in about 18 months. The second change was back to my original choice I think. I wouldn’t change for change’s sake but if you find something more pleasing, why not. It’s your blog!

  12. Value contents over presentation… it’s been said time and time again. The former, supposedly, is more important than the latter. Not true. Photography is all about how something (everything, anything) appears.

In photography, content IS form IS shape IS how it looks. And, especially, is important. So take your time: there is nothing wrong with spending some time valuing your many options.

  13. I like the new theme (though I don’t clearly remember details of the old one). This one strikes me as crisp and clean and the images are larger. I like that part very much. It always seems to take awhile to settle into a new theme. It’s why I haven’t attempted a change in awhile. Then again, an older blog got kind of screwed up when I switched themes, so it makes me hesitate even more to do so again.

  14. Never sure what theme to use nor the reason to change. Experts say to think long and hard as to what you want the layout to do…then after fine tuning you stick with it so it becomes like a familiar ‘old friend’ for readers. Not to sure about that I get tempted to try a bring something fresh to the layout. But in so doing often fail despite checking out all the many layouts on offer…usually end up going back to the original and just changing the colour ways. The of course there is the fact that it is content not presentation that matter…again if all was equal then that is absolutely right, but bad presentation will also kill good content. Then of course you have the final point which is just how serious you take it all….if it is light hearted fun well just get on with it and enjoy. If it is a an award winning masterpiece that is your aim, well then I guess you have to do a lot of homework.

  15. Bente, I like change once in awhile, too. Have you tried looking in that WordPress browser and filtering for one column themes? They sacrifice widgets in the sidebar for extra space so most let you present bigger photos. I bought the custom design upgrade for mine and adjusted the CSS so the column was wider. My wife uses Quintus and I really like it for its simplicity.

  17. I think this one is better because your photos are large.
Myself have tried a couple of themes. I like dark background and simple graphics, I think: if the theme is simpler, images are more in focus.

  18. Well, you seem to have plenty of advice . . . I picked Twenty-Ten, and continuity is a big thing with me, so while I occasionally think about it, it’s not likely I will change. It helps I like my theme.

Then again, I have a mix of writing and photos, and push anyone serious about looking at my photos to head over to SmugMug.

  23. Bente, from what I gather, this theme takes a featured image from the photo gallery to head the page. Which seems to be ok with more than a few shots, ie not as noticeable, but with one shot it does appear as a repeat. Hope this makes sense. . . .

It can always be changed later or re-designed. This is a great photo be the way…Eddie

I’ve changed themes a couple of times and while the size of the images of the theme I am currently using is a bit smaller than I would like I do like the clean look of it. But I had no idea there were 1600 themes! Maybe it’s time to reconsider. Thanks for the great post. <<>>

  27. I don’t think about it too much. I know I would like to learn how to format my photos and text so they are easier to read. WordPress will compress everything even after I save the post with space between pictures and text. The color is fixed because that’s what my main website is. Wanted it to look pretty much the same as my site.
