I have been entertained by Instagram photos for some time, at least some of them, and wondered if I should become an instagrammer myself. Several things made me not to. One is lack of time. It obviously takes some extra time to take, edit and upload photos to another page, in addition to this blog, to my webpage, and to my Facebook Page. In addition to my regular chores. But maybe my biggest feeling against it is the sharing. Why “give” away for free, since photos is my work and income. There are also criticism, saying Instagram is ruining photography, all the photos looks the same. But that is maybe yesterdays criticism, for here is a link to how 4 photo editors are using Instagram.

I will probably not loose anything by joining Instagram (except for time). I‘ll see if it adds anything. So a few days ago I got my own Instagram. For the moment it is just a pastime, doing some testing. And then we’ll see. I have just used my phone yet, but understand you can also upload other photos. It is probably not necessary to put those retrograde fileters, but at the moment I am seeing how they look like. What do you think? And are you on Instagram?

  1. Wonderful photos, and I agree that much time can be lost on instagram and other social media. Time I don’t have due to work and other commitments off-line. 🙂 So I’ve shunned instagram, facebook, twitter and the such. I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts on instagram further down the track.

    1. I thought to give it a try. So far I find it a bit amusing to upload photos right there in the woods. Usually I take my camera home for editing pictures, and that might take a day or some months to fulfill. Thanks for your comment Draco.

  2. As always your photos are beautiful and wonderful compositions. I started a Flickr, 500px, Twitter, Linkedln, Facebook and several photography forum memberships but the reality is, (and I am retired of course and have limited energy/memory with health issues), they are just too time consuming to keep up. I don’t have an Instagram account.

    Unless membership gives you either income (as a photojournalist), or great enjoyment interacting with fellow site members, I have to be honest and say all the social sites can become a chore and time-waster. When it all ‘boils down to it’ I still prefer time outdoors and fresh air (without modern technology).

    And, of course, while online photo uploads showcase your talent, they also leave your images open to unsolicited use.

    Only you can decide how much time you want to spend online and what sites you want to spend it on, but I know there are some Photographers who depend on the internet for their income.

    1. Wow, that is a lot of experience with different sites and networks, Vicki. It can be wise to try different ones, but I agree with you, it is hopeless to stay and do them all. Other things to do, and of course we all need fresh air, and nature. Thank you for your comment, Vicki.

  3. No Instagram for me…or any of the others besides Facebook and occasionally Google+. The blog, FB and my webpage, which is way overdue for more images, take up more time than I have available. Every day there are more opportunities to, as you said, give away our images.

    1. Hahaha, I “like” that comment about everyday have more opportunities to give away our images. It is not only funny of course, but at the same time there are a lot of new possibilities out there. But we certainly don’t have time for them all. I haven’t tried Google+, but have considered it.     1. Instagram is for sharing pictures with “the world”, Emilie. Most people use their phones, snap a picture, add a filter for effects (many do, not all), and upload. It wasn’t hard to get started, and it takes just a blink to publish. Thanks a lot for your comment.

  5. I have an account (I have an account pretty much everywhere I ever heard of) although I don’t use it. Like you, I concentrate on the blog as my main dissemination point. I’ve played with it, but I prefer to share a bit more than just a photo. I still have the account, but I think I removed all the photos. I will go and add one now just to see if it works.

    And yes, nice photos . . . as for the treatments, that apparently is part of the fun.

    1. There is also the privacy issue . . . whatever I post I usually tag with a signature using DigiMarc, so I can track it if need be. Posting from the phone leaves it open for others to take and me without a good way to know about it (also why I stopped using Pinterest for my photos).

      . . . not that anyone would use my photos; it’s just a quirk of mine (I’m a selfish bastard).

    2. I am not surprised you have pretty much every kind of account, Emilio, since you are of the kind who wants to know for himself I guess. And I am not surprised you don’t use them all, since that is not possible. I guess the blog is what it’s end up with? DigiMarc, I have heard about it, and forgotten. More than 10 years ago, when my friend artist sent me an Email telling me her F*****k account, I noticed that unless I join them while giving away my password of my Email, I couldn’t see what my friend uploaded, and I instantly realized that this is the fraud.= Just make us to the NUMBERS which is the sales point to the advertiser. (using password and steal the address list and send out the false invitation to everybody = that’s how they increased the members. 🙂 —- Anyhow, my friend is in the Email contact. And I’m not a member of any SNS, thanks-goodness though, I’m
    receiving lords of invitations from all sorts of SNS (since somebody a member put my name as a friend) —– I asked those, if He (or She) ever get any business or important contact through such as Link****, the answer was NO. Everybody join it with false expectation with sweet word of “Connected” —- Connected so what ? Good Viral Viz made many Youtuber quite rich, though, have you heard anybody became rich or even just famous through Frikr or Instagram ? If anybody interested in what I’m doing they can contact me through the comment function of the Blog. (such massage wouldn’t be published — still I can see the URL and Eml Address, hence able to answer — What DO I need more ?)
    I don’t want to be “Connected” with whom just try to show-off “I’m Connected with HIM” = No thanks.

    1. I know others who are not using social media (I guess that is what you mean with SNS), so you are not the only one. Myself I find all this incredibly time consuming, but it can also be incredibly interesting, some times. And I also include wordpress or other blog services. But there are of course pitfalls and even scam. I find it wise to try some of these opportunities, but we certainly can’t have it all going. Thaks for your comment, Yoshizen.

  7. These photos are really very nice. Since I’m not a member, I’m probably missing out on some excellent photography. Your post has given me some food for thought about enlisting just to see what else I can discover.

    1. There are so much to discover. I am not fond of using my phone for looking at photography, as so many are today. But I can also see Instagram photos on my computer, and I might after all look at some pictures while traveling around. Thanks for your comment, Ken.

  9. Your photos are – as always – just beautiful. Social media is so huge now, it can be an enormous time sink. I love WordPress, and the interaction I get with like-minded people, I use Facebook and am on Twitter, LinkedIn and Pintrest, but just don’t use them, except to publicise my blog. Even WordPress takes a chunk out of my day, but I enjoy it enough for it to be worthwhile. Good luck with the Instagram!

  10. Lovely photos! I like instagram and how people who have no interest in a big camera suddanly are able to make some piece of art as well.
    But remember when signing in and uploading, instagram can use and sell (!) your photos. The terms and conditons are pretty harsh.

  12. The only thing you would loose (in theory) is your time…..trouble is that is one thing none of us have either enough off or can replace. Time is very precious. I limit and enjoy my Blog interaction. But socially I do have Facebook to which enable me to keep up to date with the Family activities where ever they are in the World.

    1. It seems you are more or less where I am in choosing WP and FB. And I now use instagram in addition. Yes, time is limited, that is probably the main attraction with Instagram I believe, since it can be used in about no time. Thanks for your comment David.

  15. J’utilise Instagram quelquefois , le site dispose de différents outils qui peuvent être intéressants . Un point négatif ; on doit souvent ” rogner ” la photo 😦 ce qui peut provoquer de la frustration !

  20. I’m having a hard time keeping up with blogging, much less adding anything else. I’m not sure what benefits would come from adding anything new. Only eating up more time as you mentioned.

  21. I’m not an instagramee Bente.. I’m struggling to keep websites and blog up to date. I post to my Facebook page automatically when I post on my blog, that’s as far as that goes. I have a twitter account but I don’t use it. There are too many photographs to take and other business to do than spend my whole time at the computer uploading images here there and everywhere.. I think my blog will have to remain my focus and main online presence, along with my portfolio and sales websites. I’ll be interested to hear how your experience goes down the line a little. 🙂

  23. The Instagram “enhancement filters” do the opposite of what they should do. Every photograph looks alike in the end. Individuality gets lost and replaced by algorythms. Needless to say, I don’t have an Instagram account. Maybe you heard about the HDR-hole. It’s the same with Instagram filters. I don’t have time either and can hardly manage to log into Facebook daily and Flickr every other day. One can still use the “social networks” even without being social. One just doesn’t get many likes or favourites or plusses or comments.

  27. Wonderful Pictures Bente.
    I just joined Instagram a week back after getting a new Smartphone and I have followed you 🙂 and for now it is just a trial phase for me too. I tried Twitter earlier and am using it to follow a handful of people and check the tweets very very rarely and I am not on any other social media as of now.

Franly I love the originals, instagram for me means investing in a smartphone for photography instead of a beautiful old fashioned prime lens…. look at the scale in your originals, instagram squares them off, but then maybe I’m old school and must give in to the reasons presented by the pros…

  30. I’m on Instagram too but as I am using an old iPhone 3 (!), my images are not that good. it is really difficult to know how many ‘presences’ to have on the web. My Flickr account is more or less dormant, 500px gets little attention, I put all my energy into my two blogs. But….when I’m out (and when I buy a new iPhone) then Instagram does provide a instant way of posting something worthwhile. I thought I would upload some of my ordinary images onto my phone from my computer to post onto Instagram. How hard could that be? Answer – an absolute nightmare.

  33. That’s a great curve the water makes in your picture of the shoreline.

    To answer your question: no I’m not on Instagram, and for the reasons you mentioned. I have a Facebook page but hardly ever update it. I was also late to blogging, beginning four years ago. Doing something well is a lot of work and time, and I wouldn’t want to do something in any way except well.

  34. My son convinced me – I should try Instagram. So, I’m only using my phone, and I find it amusing, yes. But time consuming of course…I know about the fastness to upload though, and my joy lies in being able to experiment more with the photos. than on the blog. Maybe I’ll keep up with it for a while. I’ll try to find you!
